A Filipino scientist in Iloilo City has discovered an antimicrobial compound that can be used as potential beta-lactamase inhibitors to formulate new antibiotics.

“Ang compund po na aming natuklasan ay isang potential beta-lactamase inhibitor, ito yung hinahalo sa mga mura at mahihinang antibiotics para maging mabisa ito laban sa infection,” said the scientist who made the discovery, Dr. Julius Adam Lopez.

(The compound we discovered is a potential beta-lactamese inhibitor. It can be used to make cheap antibiotics more potent against infections)

Dr. Lopez led the University of San Agustin in handling the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology among Filipino researchers in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

(The difference in this compound is its structure. It's different from existing beta-lactamase inhibitors currently available in the market. This means we may be able to create a new medicine.)

He also shared that the discovery was made this February as part of Philippine Marine (PHILMARINE) - beta-lactamase inhibitor (BLI), which was sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP).

(If we can prove it through upcoming experiments, it will not only benefit the Philippines but other countries as well)

(If we are to succeed, we will need the help of local pharmaceutical firms for mass production. If it can be manufactured in the Philippines, it will be more affordable and accessible to Filipinos.)

Last month, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said it strives to find more ways and programs to make Filipino scientists stay in the country.

One is the Balik Scientist Program, which urges Filipino scientists, technologists, and experts to return to the country and share their expertise to promote scientific, agro-industrial, and economic development.
