(June 29, 2025) — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has removed countdown timers from traffic lights in Metro Manila to improve traffic flow.

These were replaced with a sensor-based system that adjusts signals based on the actual volume of vehicles on the road. So far, 96 intersections are now using the new setup.

“Isandaang porsyento nang natapos ang pagtatanggal ng mga traffic signal light timers na nasa ilalim ng pamamahala ng ahensiya,” said MMDA.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes earlier explained that the green light will blink five times before switching to yellow, which stays on for three seconds before turning red.

He noted that the old timer-based system sometimes skipped seconds and encouraged speeding as drivers tried to beat the countdown.

The agency clarified that the new system is not a trap for motorists but is meant to improve traffic flow and reduce confusion.
